The Coinbase cryptocurrency exchange announces that it has acquired Cipher Browser.
Cipher Browser is the first browser and mobile wallet that uses the Ethereum blockchain. Cipher allows you to interact with dapps powered by Ethereum on your mobile device and allows you to securely store, send and receive Ether and ERC20 tokens.
The Cipher Browser has an integrated messaging system and is able to access applications such as CryptoKitties.
Existing Cipher features will also be merged into Toshi according to an announcement on Twitter, “Exciting news! Cipher Browser is joining Coinbase! Pete Kim will become head of engineering for Toshi and we’ll be merging many features of Cipher into Toshi.” Cipher also marked its commitment to build the best Web 3 experience on mobile.
Coinbase already owns its mobile wallet for the Ethereum cryptocurrency and the Toshi dApp browser, available for iOS and Android devices.
The terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but the company said that Peter Kim, the creator of Cipher, would join Coinbase as Toshi’s new manager, responsible for transferring some features from Cipher to Toshi.
According to some rumors, the excgange would be interested in the possibility of acquiring the Earn.com platform – a platform for paid messages that rewards users with bitcoins to reply to email messages.
VP and General Manager of the company, Dan Romero, said, “I think our view is that this (cryptocurrency) is similar to the beginning of the internet. So we’re trying to build a Google-like company for the cryptocurrency space.”
Coinbase has lots to do in its quest to be a Google-esque technology giant. At the moment there are no plans for Coinbase to go public but there are the chances that the company may do it at some point in time.
